AM590 WOW - Branding

Project Summary

A Legend Reborn. AM 590 is one of Omaha's most storied radio frequencies. It first signed on April 2, 1923 as WOAW, and by 1926 became WOW, an NBC affiliate and one of the most powerful broadcast stations in the Midwest. In the decades that followed, the frequency became part of the city's cultural DNA, launching careers including a young Johnny Carson's before he became the king of late night. In 2026, Walnut Media brought the WOW name and the 590 frequency back to their sports roots. AM 590 WOW needed a brand identity that honored its century of history while signaling an aggressive, forward-looking return to the airwaves.

The Challenge

AM 590 WOW carried one of the most recognized names in Omaha broadcast history and that was both the opportunity and the problem. Returning it to the air in 2026 as a modern ESPN and Husker's sports station meant connecting the iconic station back in the day with this new modern era. Today's sports radio landscape is loud, confident, and built for screens as much as speakers. Our job was to find the visual language that connected those two worlds: something that respected where 590 had been while making clear it was built for where sports media is going.

The Solution

We executed a complete brand evolution centered on one directive: honor the legend, built for today's game. The goal was a modernized visual identity with strict branding standards engineered for cross-platform utility, from microphone flags, signage, social media profiles, and digital pitch decks.

To protect the station's deep-rooted equity in the Omaha market, we anchored the identity in the WOW name itself, ensuring instant recognition for listeners who grew up with the frequency. But we completely overhauled everything around it, introducing a high-impact typography system and a bold, sports-first logo ecosystem that could compete visually with the national ESPN and Husker brand it now sits alongside.

The new identity introduces a dynamic primary logo designed to command attention on major assets, billboards, web banners, and on-air graphics, pairing the iconic WOW wordmark with the AM 590 frequency badge and ESPN and Husker affiliation in a single, unified lockup. Alongside it, we developed flexible secondary marks and standalone badges built for the diverse range of marketing materials a modern radio station demands. We also crafted a compact WOW monogram lockup engineered specifically for small digital surfaces like social media profiles and mobile app icons, where the full logo needs room it doesn't always have.

By building out these multiple asset variations, we gave AM 590 WOW a cohesive, hard-working design system that maintains sharp visual consistency across every touchpoint, whether the audience is hearing it on the air or seeing it on a screen.
